Students face further rent rises

Students: Its an expensive life

Students heading to University this autumn can expect another stiff rise in rent this year.

An annual increase of 4.3% will see students paying on average £70 a week, according to website Accommodation for Students.

The study has been been running for over 10 years and is based on a survey of 21,000 properties nationwide.

London students are hit the worse, having to fork out around on average £100 a week, with Cambridge, Guildford, Uxbridge, Exeter, St Andrews and Brighton not far behind at £80 a week.

Students from Canterbury have to find around £75 a week on average for both Universities. Ashley Watson, student at Canterbury Christ Church University, 19, said: “I’ve found it tough to keep up with rent in my first year, God knows how I’m going to be able to cope in my second and final year.”

However it could be even worse for students as they are currently exempt from paying council tax.
