Art upheaval

Art students to pay more for materials

Third year art students at Canterbury Christ Church University are unhappy that they have to pay an extra £120 for supplies this year.

Previously the levy for art materials in the final year of an art degree was £50, however because the University’s art departments are in financial trouble they have raised this to £170.

Lecturer James Frost confirmed this. He said: “The reason why the system of buying materials has been set up is because the University's departments have gone cashless. We are not actually allowed to handle cash in buying and selling art materials.”

One student expressed her unhappiness with the situation by posting on a Canterbury discussion website that: “Many of the students have signed a petition refusing to pay this money but the University has stated they will not let us complete our degree.”
