SOAP finds a new home

Soap has a new home

SOAP club nights have found a temporary home, following the loss of their building in St Georges Place.

After losing the building to a redevelopment scheme for Canterbury Christ Church University, the organisers of the SOAP nights had planned to relocate to a building on Wincheap Industrial Estate.

But the plans received heavy opposition from the council and were scrapped.

Not ones to give up, the team then tried to relocate to a free night in an existing club. The go ahead was given for a hugely anticipated re-opening in Kent University’s The Venue, but the event was cancelled at the last minute following legal issues.

Despite the setbacks, SOAP is now set to return at Chill, a former rival to the SOAP nights held in Studio 41. The night, named 'alphaBEATS', has been heralded as ‘SOAPS little brother’, by resident DJ Stephen Sullivan. The idea behind the new event was to have different theme for each letter of the alphabet.

Sub promoter Johnathan Wall hopes it will be a great success: “Essentially the concept of “alphaBEATs” is that each week is themed around a different letter, the first being “S”, so we will have strawberries, sandwiches, sweets, snow machine, steak etc. There is no dress code and we encourage people to dress up in costumes to try and create the relaxed atmosphere necessary to make people return the next week.

Our intention was to create a relaxed, enjoyable, theme night for the SOAP customers who have not been presented with an alternative club night that was substantial enough to compare to SOAP.”

The new night starts on the 23rd March.
