Speed limit campaign succeeds

A249 between Canterbury and Wingham

A six-year campaign to reduce a speed limit on an accident-prone road has finally succeeded.

The A257 between Canterbury and Wingham is an accident black spot, however Kent County Council  is hopeful that the number of crashes will drop, after lowering the speed limit from 60 to 50mph.
Many campaigners had hoped for the limit to be dropped to 40mph, and even though it has not dropped as drastically as was wanted, it is still a start.

Locals in the area have had their say and most agree that it is good news. Brenda Hallows, explained that: “It is a good thing as long as people stick to that speed limit.”

Student Mark Halls said he is happy with the reduced limit, however hopes it does not cause more crashes. “If the road is busy all the time then it could cause more accidents.”

However, some people are still not happy with the reduced limit. 71-year-old George Alling still believes the speed limit is too high: “It is preposterous the speed we hurtle around the roads. The limit is just too high.”
