Roman theatre uncovered

Archaeologist working on the site

A new archaeological discovery has halted work in Canterbury. Melissa Green and Alex Cowley dug around to see what they could find.

Workmen in Canterbury have uncovered an ancient theatre wall while trying to fix a fire hydrant.

The wall was discovered outside the Three Tuns pub on the corner of Castle Street.

Archaeologists from the Canterbury Archaeological Trust are now excavating the site to uncover the extent of the remains.

Paul Bennett, the director of the trust, has said that the remains of the theatres structure will be preserved, and the water pipes will be moved to another location.
