Jogger faces jail term for alleged assault

Canterbury Magistrates Court

A man aged 59 accused of beating a pensioner with a wooden bat has appeared in court.

Arthur Mcmaster appeared before Canterbury magistrates this morning charged with causing actual bodily harm and carrying an offensive weapon.
Mr Mcmaster, who denies both charges, is alleged to have attacked Mr Cole, 72, after a disagreement whilst he was out jogging in January.

The court was told how Mcmaster, of Nackington Road, Canterbury, struck the elderly man, with a wooden bat after he took offence to the fact the 72-year-old's dog was not on a lead.

Mr Cole sustained several injuries as a result of the alleged attack.

Mr Batts, the defendant’s lawyer, said that the extent of the injuries was a black eye and an arm injury and this should factor in future sentencing.

The case will now go to Canterbury Crown Court for trial.

Mcmaster was released on conditional bail.
